A Brief History Of Our Site

2016
September 
The Duchy of Cornwall leased a piece of previous agricultural land to Colan Parish Council for 100 years free of charge. 
The council did not want to manage the site so an allotment committee was formed by plot holders.
October 
Marking out 30 plots. 
November 
Local residents express concerns regarding livestock on site due to animal welfare, bird flu and vermin. 

2017
January 
Facebook group set up. 
Bank account set up. 
Contractors Champion start work on car park, banks, driveway and water pipers.
February 
Duchy donated sheds for each plot which were erected by Cornwall Shed Company where plot holders have provided shed bases.
Some sheds blew over in the following high winds. 
Grant from John Fitter for a notice board. 
Became members of NSALG.
March 
More sheds blown over in high winds. Constitution and rules agreed and distributed.
April 
Shed from plot 2 stolen (flat packed). Gate is padlocked.
June 
Deer height fence erected along footpath and pedestrian gate installed by "Takeafence" 
Funding provided by Parish Council via Denzell Downs grant. 
Site strimmer purchased.
July 
Water connected from neighbouring farmer's private borehole. 
Water pressure is poor and supply intermittent.
September 
Marked out 5 half plots at the bottom end of driveway.
October 
Children's competition to create a Logo. 
Spring bulbs planted near pedestrian gate, driveway and some banks. 
Constitution and rules updated. 
Pallet enclosures for manure, compost, and spare wood erected at top end of site.
November 
Bonfire night in the orchard. 
4 Apple trees, 4 pear trees and two cherry trees planted in the orchard. 
Successful lottery grant for a shipping container, tools, community shed and plants.
December 
Mulled wine and mince pies event in car park, and handing out prices for the children's competition.

2018
February 
Pallet enclosures for manure and compost erected at the bottom end of the site. 
A trailer for communal use purchased and restored
March 
Sign erected on main road by allotment association for concealed entrance following concerns regarding the speed of traffic. 
First Aid and Eye Wash kit installed on main drive by plot 15.
April 
Shipping container purchased and installed after groundwork and asphalt scrapings created a deep base.
May 
Dock weed bonfire and afternoon tea party. 
June 
Constitution and rules updated and distributed to all members. 
Brush cutter purchased and two secondhand petrol mowers. 
Container cladded
July 
Mains water connected
August 
Container roof added. 
November 
Bonfire night with BBQ and good attendance. 
Received 160 saplings from the Woodland Trust.
December Mince pie and mulled wine event. 
Shed blown over in strong winds.

2019
January 
Wassailing in the orchard
February 
Planting saplings around orchard banks and bottom end of site. 
March 
Slabs laid for base for community shed on plot 14. 
Flower beds created and hedging planted.
April 
Monthly plot inspections starts (April till October, then one inspection in winter). 
Damson tree planted on community plot for first allotment baby.
May 
Grant secured from Denzell Downs Funds for community shed. 
First allotment newsletter via email sent out.
